Why Family and Childhood Photography Prints Are Essential: Why should I print my photos?

I’ve always loved displaying family photos in my home, but I know updating them often gets pushed aside. With the ease of accessing and sharing images on our personal devices, it's easy to forget about putting the latest pictures on our walls, whether it be from a photoshoot or photos taken at home.

I recently noticed my children spending more time looking at the family photos and photos of themselves on our walls. They talk about the people in the pictures, the moments captured, family holidays, weddings, and themselves as newborns. It is forming their identity and a connection to their family - especially our family who live far away. It got me thinking about the wonderful benefits of having physical prints in the home. They don’t just decorate our walls, they help tell our family's story, preserving memories and strengthening bonds across generations.

I read a study online from 1975 that explored how children seeing printed photos of themselves impacts their self esteem. Nine and ten year old students took Polaroid photos of themselves with a range of poses and facial expressions over a five week timeframe. They then used the images to create scrapbooks weekly and it was found that there was a 37% increase in the children's average self-esteem behaviours. Children seeing photos of themselves can really increase their sense of self and their confidence.

As a mother and family photographer, I highly recommend printing your photos, whether through a professional photo printing service for large displays or smaller prints for photo albums that your children can enjoy. One of my favourites is Wondermade photo decals. They won’t damage your walls, can be moved around easily, and are perfect for taking with you if you move to a new home.

For families with small children, a soft or plush photo album filled with pictures of family members and your little ones is a fantastic idea.

My children have had these albums for years and still love looking through them, sharing stories about the people in the photos. These albums not only entertain and develop language skills, but also help children feel connected to their family and their history.

Printing out your family photos is a wonderful way to cherish and preserve those special memories for years to come. It adds a personal touch and allows you to create beautiful displays in your home. So, next time you have a family photography session, don't forget to print out those precious moments!
