Welcoming a new baby into your family is an incredibly special time, and capturing those first precious moments with newborn photography ensures you’ll have beautiful memories to look back on forever. One of the most common questions parents ask is, "When should I book my newborn photography session?"
Here’s everything you need to know to secure the best timing for those perfect newborn portraits.

The Best Time for Newborn Photography
The ideal window for newborn photography is between 5-14 days after birth. During this time, babies are still very sleepy, naturally curl up into womb-like poses, and have that fresh newborn look that changes quickly. After two weeks, babies become more alert, and it may not be possible to get all the sweet sleepy poses. While it’s still possible to capture beautiful photos after this period, the first two weeks provide the best opportunity for those classic newborn shots.
When to Book Your Session
To ensure availability, it’s best to book your newborn photography session during your second trimester or early in the third trimester. Newborn photographers schedule sessions based on due dates and allow flexibility for early or late arrivals. Since spots fill up quickly, securing your session well in advance ensures you won’t miss out.
What If Baby Arrives Early or Late?
Babies rarely arrive exactly on their due date, and that’s completely okay! When you book in advance, we pencil in your due date and adjust the session once your baby arrives. I always leave space in my schedule to accommodate early or late arrivals, ensuring you don’t miss your newborn session.
Can You Book a Newborn Session After Baby Arrives?
Absolutely! So many parents don't realise they would like newborn photos until they are already in the newborn stage - you can still book a session after your baby is born. If you’ve recently had your baby and are wondering if you can still get newborn photos, reach out as soon as possible, and I’ll do my best to fit you in. If your baby is older than two weeks, we can still capture beautiful images, some may just be more relaxed, awake baby photos.

What If You Miss the Newborn Window?
If your baby is older than two weeks, don’t worry! There are still plenty of opportunities to capture gorgeous photos. A 3-4 week session may include a mix of sleepy and awake images, while 6-12 week milestone sessions highlight baby’s first smiles and personality. If you missed the newborn stage, consider booking a milestone session instead.
