Are you looking for a newborn photographer in Werribee or Bacchus Marsh areas who knows how to create a calm and peaceful environment for you and your little one?
At Bunch Photography, I understand that keeping a newborn relaxed and happy during a photo session is key to capturing those perfect moments. I'm sharing my top tips and tricks for keeping babies calm during a newborn photography session. If you're planning a session in Werribee or the surrounding areas, read on to learn how I ensure a smooth and stress-free experience for you and your baby!

Create a Warm, Cozy Environment
One of the most important aspects of a successful newborn photo session is maintaining a warm and cozy environment. Babies are used to the warmth of the womb, so a comfortable temperature in the room can make a big difference. I aim for around 25 degrees - to help your newborn feel secure and relaxed. If a baby gets too warm, we adjust the temperature as needed.
2. White Noise and Calming Sounds
White noise is a fantastic tool for newborn photography sessions. It mimics the comforting sounds of the womb, helping babies settle more quickly. I play soothing white noise in the background during photography sessions. The constant, gentle sound can make all the difference in keeping your little one relaxed throughout their session, and they will be less likely to startle when hearing voices or when I am repositioning them.
3. Wraps and Swaddling Techniques
Swaddling is another technique to help keep newborns calm. Wrapping them snugly can help them feel secure and reduce their startle reflex. I use high-quality wraps that are soft on delicate skin, ensuring your baby is comfortable during their session. I often start with wrapped photos and by the time I move to unwrapped poses your baby is fast asleep.
4. Follow the Baby’s Lead
Every baby is unique, and what works for one might not work for another. That’s why newborn photography sessions are completely baby-led. I adjust my approach based on how your baby is feeling and responding to the session. If a baby prefers to be wrapped, I'll focus more on wrapped setups. If they enjoy stretching out, I’ll incorporate those sweet unwrapped shots. Being flexible helps ensure that your baby stays calm to capture beautiful photos that reflect their natural personality.
5. Dummies or pacifiers: A Soothing Option
While not every baby takes to a pacifier (and I don't expect you to introduce them only for the session!), it can be a helpful tool for calming newborns during a session. If your baby uses a pacifier, I encourage bringing it along. A few gentle sucks can often help soothe a baby back to sleep, making it easier to transition between different poses. At Bunch Photography, I will always respect and follow your preferences and your baby’s needs, so if you’d rather skip the pacifier, I have other tricks to use!
6. Gentle Touch and Soothing Hands
By gently holding a baby’s hands close to their body, we can prevent those startle reflexes that can wake them up. I use calming, gentle touch to keep them feeling secure while transitioning between poses. This hands-on approach, combined with a soft, reassuring presence, helps babies feel safe and comfortable, which leads to those beautiful sleepy photos.
7. Timing the Session Just Right
Choosing the right time for your newborn photography session is key to a smooth experience. I recommend scheduling your session within the first two weeks after birth. During this time, babies are naturally sleepier and more content, making it easier to capture those sweet, curled-up poses. I also work closely with parents to find a time that fits around feeding and napping schedules, so that we can create a session that works best for your baby’s needs.
There are times that this timeframe does not suit your baby's needs - some babies may need extra time in the hospital or have other reasons that the session can't be scheduled in the first 2 weeks. I have worked with newborns ranging from 7 days old to 6 weeks old (6 month old baby girl shown below) and although they results vary slightly, we can still create beautiful images!
8. Feeding Breaks and Baby’s Needs
If your little one gets hungry during their session, we can take breaks to ensure they are comfortable—whether that means a feeding break, a diaper change, or just a snuggle with a parent. This baby-led approach is at the heart of what I do, ensuring that your session is as relaxed and enjoyable as possible for everyone involved.
