bunchphotography

Welcoming a new baby into your home is an exciting time for any family! Capturing these precious early moments with a newborn photography session allows you to preserve these memories for years to come. At Bunch Photography, I offer newborn photography services to families based in Werribee, Bacchus Marsh and surrounding areas. I give all my clients the option to come to my home studio or to travel to your home. Choosing to have the session in the comfort of your own home not only makes it easier for you and your little one but also adds a personal touch to the photos.

Although the session will take longer to ensure I have time to set up and pack up, you are able to rest and relax during this time!

Here’s how you can prepare your home to make the most of your in-home newborn photography session:

1. Space

I bring all my equipment with me to create beautiful images of your new baby. I am used to working in a range of space sizes but it can be helpful, if possible, to have coffee tables or side tables moved aside so allow for a larger work area. The picture below shows an example of the equipment I bring along with me.

2. Declutter and Simplify the Space

If you would like photographs with your family home as the backdrop, when preparing your home, focus on simplicity. You don’t need to deep clean the entire house, but decluttering the areas where you would like to have photos taken, such as the nursery, can make a big difference. The focus of the session will be on your baby and family, so removing distractions will ensure that your photos look clean and timeless.

3. Set the Temperature

Newborns love warmth, and it helps them to sleep soundly during the session. Since your baby may be photographed with a little outfit, without clothes or with minimal swaddling, setting the room temperature slightly warmer than usual can help keep them comfortable throughout the session. Aim for around 24-26°C. Having a space heater handy is a great option.

4. Choose a Few Special Items

I will bring along some props and wraps, but I absolutely love when families would like to add a special touch. This could be a handmade blanket, a special toy, an item to represent your baby's cultural background or a family heirloom. Including these in the photos makes the images even more meaningful.

5. Plan for Breaks

Newborn photography sessions typically last between 2-3 hours to allow plenty of time for feeding, nappy changes, and comforting your baby. Don’t worry if your baby needs extra cuddles or a little feeding break—this is completely normal, and I work around a baby’s needs, ensuring they are happy and comfortable throughout the session.

6. Include the Family

Some of the most heartwarming images come from capturing the love and connection between you and your baby. Make sure both parents, and any siblings, are ready to join in for a few photos. Dress in neutral, coordinated outfits that reflect your style but don’t compete for attention. Soft colors like white, beige, pastels, or muted tones work well and keep the focus on the connection between you and your newborn.

In Summary

Preparing your home for an in-home newborn photography session doesn’t have to be stressful! By following these tips, you’ll be ready to create beautiful, timeless images that you’ll treasure for years to come.
