How to Prepare Siblings for a Newborn Photography Session: Tips from a Newborn Photographer in Melbourne's West

Welcoming a new baby into the family can be a big transition for older siblings, and including them in a newborn photography session is a beautiful way to capture these early bonds. However, getting siblings ready for the session requires a little preparation to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone. Here are some helpful tips to prepare your little ones for their sibling’s newborn photoshoot.

1. Talk About the Photoshoot in Advance

Young children do best when they know what to expect. Explain to them that they will be part of a special photo session to celebrate their new sibling. Show them pictures from previous sessions to help them understand what will happen and get them excited!

2. Keep Expectations Realistic

Toddlers and young children can be unpredictable. Some may be eager to participate, while others may need a little time to warm up. Let them know that they can take breaks if needed, and we will work around their comfort level to capture beautiful moments.

3. Choose Comfortable Outfits

Simple, soft, and neutral-coloured clothing works best for photos. Avoid itchy fabrics or tight clothing that may make them uncomfortable. If they have a favourite outfit they love, consider letting them wear it for part of the session to make them feel more at ease, or give them a few options you know will look good so they have a say in what they wear.

4. Bring Snacks and Small Rewards

A well-fed child is a happy child! Bring some non-messy snacks and water to keep their energy up. A fun activity after the session (like a trip to the park) can also serve as a great incentive for cooperation.

If you choose a studio session and you are bringing a toddler aged child, I will have colouring pencils and some toys ready for your little one to play with, you are welcome to bring along a favourite toy or book.

5. Let Them Interact Naturally

Some of the sweetest sibling photos come from natural moments. Encouraging kisses, snuggles, or even holding the baby’s tiny fingers can lead to heartfelt images. If your child is hesitant, that’s okay! We’ll capture whatever interactions they’re comfortable with. Even photos of siblings hands on your newest addition are so sweet!

6. Keep it Fun and Stress-Free

Make the experience fun! Singing songs, playing peek-a-boo, or telling jokes can help keep older siblings engaged and happy. If they start to lose interest, we’ll take a quick break before trying again.

7. Be Patient and Flexible

Every child is different, and some may take longer to warm up than others. That’s completely normal! We’ll go with the flow, keeping the session light and enjoyable so that we capture the best possible moments.
