As a new parent, nothing is more precious than your newborn baby. Those tiny features, soft cheeks, and little yawns are moments you want to cherish forever. Newborn Photography is a way to capture these special moments. When it comes to capturing these precious memories, safety is always the top priority.
Newborn Photography

Newborn photography requires skill, patience, training and an understanding of safety considerations for newborns and children. A professional newborn photographer ensures the safety and comfort of your little one while using their knowledge and experience to create beautiful images.
Newborn photography should be booked during your pregnancy and sessions are usually scheduled within the first two weeks of your baby's arrival, this is dependent on a range of factors, including medical needs and gestational age. Some premature baby's may be older when they have their newborn photos taken.
Choose a Qualified Photographer

When selecting a newborn photographer, look for a photographer who specialises in newborn photography and has experience working with infants. Ask them how they ensure the comfort and safety of your baby during the session. I highly recommend viewing your potential photographer's portfolio gallery before you book to ensure you like their photography style.
Creating a Comfortable and Safe Environment
Safety is the first priority during newborn photography sessions. The studio should be warm and comfortable (around 26 degrees celsius), with no hazards or obstacles that could pose a risk to the baby or be a trip hazard for photographers or parents. Music or white noise can also help to create a calm space for baby, helping them to feel comfortable and secure during the session.
Newborn Posing
Newborns are not able to support their heads independently until a few months old. Any posing should be done with care and should never force the baby into uncomfortable positions, or positions they are resisting. Props such as pillows, blankets, and wraps are used to support the baby securely, as well as hands on and near baby, which can then photoshopped out. At times, parents may be asked to assist in posing to keep a hand on baby for safety.
The photo below shows an example of a parent supporting the back of baby's neck/head and the photoshopped final version.
Sanitisation and Hygiene
Newborn Photographers should always be up to date with vaccines. I am up to date with regular vaccinations, Whooping Cough and Covid-19. At times, I use an assistant, particularly with twins, and my assistant is also fully vaccinated.
Maintaining a clean and sanitised environment is crucial when handling newborns. Photographers should wash their hands thoroughly before working with the baby and ensure that all props and equipment are cleaned between sessions.
Newborn photography is a wonderful way to celebrate the arrival of your baby, capture their tiny features and create lasting memories. You can rest assured that your baby is in good hands with a newborn photographer.
So, go ahead and book your newborn photography session – your little one's first photoshoot awaits!
